If you find yourself partaking in this activity, then you can very safely consider yourself an Internet fanatic. If you are online almost all of the time, you should also be aware of certain “netiquettes” that you must follow. Never heard of that word, right? A blend of Internet and Etiquette is called “Netiquette.”
In simple words, netiquette relates to certain rules of any online communication. What goes online, stays there, right? So, we need to be aware of what we are publishing online. Do you know how it helps? Well, appropriate tweets, comments and photos might save you from getting into hot water. Most importantly, if you can abide by the digital etiquettes like securing your passwords, using anti-virus software, ignoring pop-ups, etc., you will be capable of keeping the cyber fraudsters at bay. Here are some great “netiquettes” to retain your digital image. Are they a part of your digital footprint yet?
Convey the Right Tone
You need to ensure that all your messages are professional, taking extra care of the common typographical and grammatical errors. It’s best if you carefully proof-read all your messages before hitting the enter button on social media.
Try to avoid sarcasm and humor because most of the time it is misinterpreted. If you are more of a social media person, refrain from sharing any personal information on these platforms, as there is a risk of ID frauds.
Don’t Click on Unknown Links and Download Attachments
Remember the thumb rule – Never Ever click on unknown links. Your system can be infected with malwares if you either click on an unknown link or open an attachment. Often you get phishing emails with spelling or grammatical errors urging you to click links. Beware of those and delete them as soon as you spot them.
Safeguard Your Passwords
We tend to use the same password for all accounts because it’s easier to remember one than many, so at the time it might seem quite convenient. But is it safe to do so? What if a hacker hacks into any one your accounts?
He/she will have complete access to your virtual accounts. It’s just a matter of time before the hacker trawls through your mails and gets a hold of all your personal information including your bank details. To be on the safe side, use different passwords for different accounts even if it means remembering multiple passwords.
Use Secure Online Shopping Sites
Today, online shopping is the new trend. However, before entering your bank or card details, always check for the locked padlock or unbroken key symbol. To indicate a secure connection, the retailer’s e-address should change from ‘http’ to ‘https’.
Pop-ups may include malicious software. They trick the end user to verify something and instead download mal-codes in the background. What is the best way to avoid that? Simply, block all pop-ups as a safety measure.
Use Public Wi-Fi Carefully
Be careful when you use public Wi-Fi. It is advisable not to carry out any bank transactions online using public Wi-Fi or share data which is public like sharing posts on social media platforms. Again, do not include social media passwords.
It is better to play safe when you are online. Make your digital presence felt in a secure way. Lastly, when you are done, always log out the correct way and remember the proverb “Better safe than sorry.”
